It's only Halloween, But I like it!

By - Steve Mezo

Once again it's that time of year where Holiday Grinches feel the need to run everyone's fun...

I really hate typing these because it means the Holiday Haters have gained a little more ground. And this time the news came from friends and contacts on Facebook telling me about how schools are cancelling any kind of Halloween celebrations.

Really?!!! I can understand the no costumes rule to keep the kids from being distracted, and I can even accept being careful with not allowing treats because of peanut allergies being a danger.

But there are a lot of fun things that can be done!

I had a blast back in grade school making Jack-o-Lanterns out of construction paper, me and the other kids tracing each other on contractors paper cutting the tracings out and making them into monsters with poster paint. And getting to watch the Disney version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow on film!

This was me back in 1976 with my Aunt Vera celebrating Halloween and she was dressed as a witch and I turned out fine. I didn't know anything about the origins of Halloween or any of it's legends. For me it was just a day of getting to dress up as a Gorilla Soldier from Planet of The Apes my Aunt Vera Dressing up as a Halloween Witch and getting to go to the Filkin's Halloween Castle behind us in Union Beach. And seeing poor Charlie Brown getting nothing but a rock in his pillow case for Halloween.

Then there's this group of kids here.

They went to strangers houses for free candy, watched Linus search for The Great Pumpkin, and *Gasp!* dressed up as a devil and a ghost. And yet they grew up to be well adjusted parents and possibly grand parents! Hey Shout Out to the fellow Planet of The Apes Fan!!!
And I guarantee not a one of them new anything about the origins of The Holiday either.

It wasn't until I was in my mid-teens that I started to become interested in the whole origin of the holiday. And read about how a lot of the traditions were brought here by Irish Immigrants. And how the original (according to legend) Jack-o-Lantern was really a hollowed out and carved turnip.

And it was even cooler to find out about other cultures that have variations of Halloween in completely different months.

China and other Asian countries have "The Hungry Ghost Festival" or "Yu Lan" that starts July 15th and is celebrated through the month, where food and other offerings are made to those recently passed and Ancestors.

Mexico has Day of The Dead"Día de Muertos" November 1st and 2nd. Where the same takes place. And while I was researching this their are even more countries that have the same rituals including those in African cultures.

So I would like to know who exactly is being offended?

One complaint I hear (If their not going with the offending somebody excuse) is safety issues. Well we can all thank the internet for making Urban Legends believable.

Another is financial inequality...
I think this was the one holiday where not having much didn't matter. It was the one day where everybody could be creative and join in trick or treating or events without being judged.
I even remember reading about a friend on Facebook that didn't have much, but his dad made a JAWA costume for him out of Contractor Paper that looked great and he had just as much fun as everybody else.

And of course there's those making the complaints that it's offending other religions. Well if they had done a little research like I had they would see that it's not the evil abomination their making it out to be.

And it's been celebrated by God fearing Church goers that they could only hope to be like.

You know for a fact that this kid had a set of Sunday Church Clothes that he used every single Sunday till he was fitted for the last suit he ever owned as an adult. But on Halloween he dressed up as a devil and had some of the best fun ever a kid could have one day of the year.

And his parents would attend Grown Up Parties where they would dress as Devils. Black Cats, Ghost, Witches and Skeletons and had a good time. And this carried on for generations without any trouble because each year the focus was on the fun part of it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is kids only get to really be kids once. So let them enjoy fun scares for a month and having one day to wear whatever they want and get a pillowcase or Blowmold plastic pumpkin full of free candy. Because there are a ton of happy memories to go along with it too.

Talking about Rob Dimension's BAGGAGE!

By - Steve Mezo

I've seen Rob Dimension on the web for a while now and my wife and I had the chance to meet him with his beyond cool wife Kim at "Todd Staruch's Grindhouse Nights at Cafe Z".

And when we were at Rob's table he was selling copies of his movie shorts "No Clowning Around" and "BAGGAGE".

Jackie and I had watched both when we got home and after I had written about No Clowning Around and pretty much gushed about it, Rob had messaged me and asked what I thought about BAGGAGE.

And my response was a "I liked It."

Now that doesn't sound bad, but in the scheme of things it kinda was.
It wasn't a matter of Rob getting mad at me or anything like that at all. It's just a different effort went into one compared to the other for him.

No Clowning Around was taken seriously as a project, but the shooting atmosphere was about having fun creating the Mumbles character in a Tales from the Crypt stye. While BAGGAGE was a more intense Alfred Hitchcock Presents atmosphere, and the shooting was more regimented.

And how do I respond to that one? "I liked it..."

It took about two months for it to hit me like a cement truck, but I realized that I loved it just as much as No Clowning Around. And Rob Dimension has such a talent as an actor that it p!$$ed me off!!!

Seriously he went from a grungy clown that I could relate to in ways that only Rob and I would understand, to a man named Benjaman that I do not like!

Seriously!!! Rob made me forget he was Rob Dimension in both shorts and became two completely characters!

Don't look at me and go "Well Duh, That's what he's supposed to do!" BECAUSE I KNOW THAT!!!
I'm saying he is True Metal when he does it and I can tell you not a lot of actors can. Look at the cast of FRIENDS they are the same characters in every kind of movie they are in. Not a single one of them act any different then their show characters.
But if you put Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Rick Deckard and Dr. Richard Kimble in the same room you'll have five different people!

And that's what Rob Dimension did with "Benjamin". He gave me a man that I just do not like, and it worked. I mean it worked to the point of I looked past all of the cinematography, angles and settings and walked with Benjamin just not liking him as a person.

So when Rob asked me what did I think of it, my response wasn't me talking about the production. It was me tolerating this guy named Benjamin that he asked me to hang out with.

If you're still with me on this congratulations on being able to follow me talking about how much I love BAGGAGE as much as No Clowning Around.

When I grow up I want to be a Movie Monster!

It's OCTOBER and that means time to buy more Horror Movies! And my good friend and Writer Director has quite and few titles out there for sale on his site CLICKHERE to buy the Flesh Eaters From Outer Space/Invasion For Flesh and Blood double feature DVD, Scarlet Moon, Haunted Hay Ride and Hate's Haunted Slay Ride.

Warren is the man that had given me my huge break in Flesh Eaters From Outer Space and Invasion For Flesh and Blood. And to get some more insight on what he had to go through in the early 90's with a crew of Metal Heads CLICKHERE to read it in his own words.

Then continue on here with my article below to see the once in a lifetime experiences I had.

Warren was the main person responsible for the whole film so he really had all the pressure hanging over his head and had to tow the line, while Shawn T. Reich and I were eighteen year old kids right out of high school that were getting to live the dream. Shawn and I were A+ students in "TV production" with a great teacher "Mr. Geller" so we at least had a working background with video shoots (Shawn might even have the first horror movie we made in class still). And we had made a dump load of commercials in class. And I had a basic F/X background from working at "The Costume Shop in Red Bank N.J."

I can't thank Warren enough for the huge chance and break he gave me. My uncle "Robert Gutowsky" had acted for Warren in "The Bloody Dead" and told him about me.

F/X Artist Ed French, My Uncle Bob and Writer Director Warren F. Disbrow

Warren had given him his card to give to me and a week later I was at Warren's door (My dad drove me) with a plastic skull made to look rotted (Right out of Marcia Lynn Cox "Makeup Monsters" book), a rubber hand I made with worms coming out of it and a big (Wow I'm going to be in movies!) grin. Warren was beyond cool and told me straight out that if I was going to work with him I would have to be serious about it and dedicated to seeing the project through. I was in and a week later I brought my friend Shawn T. Reich.

I think the main reason Warren had taken us in was he had seen his love of horror, Sci Fi and fantasy movies in us and that we had the talent and at least a working background with F/X and video production. So he had allot to work with and taught us how to focus our abilities and to do other projects we never thought we could. After a few weeks we had reached a point where he could give us projects unsupervised which freed him up to continue with the main things that needed to be constantly done.

The first project I was handed was the construction of the "Contractor Paper Cave" Warren Sr., Warren, Tony, Gene, and myself had made the chicken wire frame then began the long task of stapling the (Meat wrapping paper to it). The cave was built right in Warren's back yard and it was huge! The only down side was after any rain it would have to be repaired in area's which led to Warren naming me "The Cave Dweller" every other week I was handed the staple gun and a step ladder. Along with Warren (Using a Tarzan type voice and pointing in the direction of the cave) "Cave Dweller... Fix Cave..." Then I would plod down in daylight and come out at night time while Shawn helped Warren build props in the F/X lab. Then it was time for frozen burgers on the grill (This is the same grill we used to make F/X gel on). Yeah life was good.

Then there was my tour of duty in Sid "The Space Monster" Tony Annunziata and I would trade off being in it and boy did we have some adventures...

This was Tony's turn in the Sid outfit.

Like when I had to do a "Monster rising from the water" scene and I couldn't go under. The head of the suit floated like a cork so Tony had to cut holes in it (While I was wearing it!) we have pictures of it too. Or when Warren popped JAWS into the VCR the next day before I had to go into the water again. Did I mention that this was when the beaches were closed due to high bacteria?
It didn't help much that this place is called Shark River either...

And Tony and I had a blast being in the "John Belushi" sceen, and "Desiree Russo/Sendelbach" had made these really bad bangs for me with the front half of a wig to make me look more the part of the halfwit to drive the gag home. It's funny because when I turned my head sideways you can see where the wig ended.

It was really cool where I was able to write scenes with Warren. And it was really amazing how he could make my crazed babbling and gag notes into a workable scene and would shoot it later.

Then there were the times (which was allot) where Shawn and me survived on nothing but "WAWA" hot dogs and iced tea for weeks. God bless the creators of that stuff. And big old Thank You to "June" Who pretty much lived behind the counter. And "Anthony" the keeper of the 50,000 mile (Shawn name) WAWA hot dogs". And who can forget the "Big Top Frozen Hamburgers"? Add in some day old rolls and you had lunch for the week. I felt bad for Tony because he didn't have the goat stomach like Warren, Shawn and me because the poor guy would be puking his guts up in the bushes moments after eating them. Maybe it was stress from film making or maybe because we used that grill to heat up F/X chemicals too...

And there were more than a few times where we laughed so hard our sides hurt while filming. "Like when Greg Scott was supposed to bring two friends from the gym to play henchmen". They didn't show so Shawn and me found two bouncers from "The Polo Club" to fill in last minute. They looked great, but didn't know how to stage fight so when they were hitting Greg they were pulling back, but you can still hear him getting the wind knocked out of him on the DVD. And the floor they slammed him down on was cement. Even though Warren was under crazed pressure and had to teach us allot as we went along he always kept it enjoyable and kept you wanting to see it through. I have to say working on "Flesh Eaters From Outer Space" and "Invasion for Flesh and Blood" were two of the best times in my life.

But there were also times where I was like "Why am I doing this again?" Like when F/X Artist "Cory Geryak" had done a chest cast on me with plaster and the Vaseline underneath evaporated. So Warren and Tony had to lift up the casting while Cory cut my imbedded chest hair with a "Exacto Knife" While Warren said "Remember you're making film history!". Then on the ride home we were pulled over and all the cop saw was two long hair guys (Warren was sleeping on the back seat) with a big bag of white powder (Alganate) and four huge syringes with rubber tubing (For spurting blood F/X) between us in a beat to hell "1969 Chevy Caprice". He told us (Tony and me) to get out (Even though I explained why we had the stuff) so he says "I'm going to search your vehicle." I had nothing to hide so I said "Go ahead." I'll never forget the look on the cop's face when Warren sat up (With a bad case of bed head) and said "You know what you're doing is illegal right?" The cop just walked over handed us our ID's and told us to get moving.

And another time when we had Tim Ferrante (From the early days of "Fangoria Magazine") in the movie. I was really excited because I love the magazine and Tim knows almost everyone in the business. Well Cory Geryak had made a full head cast of Tim and then made a full foam latex head (Which Warren still has) to use in a head crushing effect. Warren needed a live shot of Tim to match the effect shot so Tim had to stand in front of his cement chimney while Cory (Wearing part of the monster costume) had to slowly push his head back (It would be sped up later). Warren said "Action" and Cory didn't realize how close Tim was to the cement and all you could hear was *THUNK!* We were all dead quiet, then Cory started to tell Tim he was sorry. But Tim took it really well and started making light of it by saying "I'm never doing horror movie's again DISBROW!" And when we were finished shooting Tim was cool enough to give me a "Fangoria Magazine" out of his own collection and autographed it on one of his interviews with "Robert Englund" (Freddy Kruger) and if that wasn't enough he gave me a "Tranzor Z" otherwise known as "Mazinga" poster after we talked about favorite cartoons and movies. And I still have both to this day.

Or after writing Gary Hoffman's (Penile Displacement) scene with Warren and re sclupting the member from Warren's "Kiss of Medusa" then coming to Warren's house the next day. And seeing Desire'e Russo sitting on Warren's porch painting the star of the scene muttering "This is soooo f**king wrong..."

Did I mention all the make out scenes I got to do? Good times!

I can still remember him editing the movies and me keeping his spirits up with "Chicken-Fil-A" while he was cutting it (Me and Shawn were usualy behind him watching some B&W drive in horror movie.) Or taking him for trips to the mall or auction when the editing machines were in the repair shop just to keep him a little sane. Those times really sucked because it was such a drawn out process and any setback was rough and it wasn't like cutting film. Any change took forever to make and you were at the mercy of the machines so if they wanted to screw something up bad all you could do was watch and curse. But Warren got through it and the movie made it to your hands (You bought a copy right?)

An Ode to Pumpkin Flavored Everything!

The proper name is "Pumpkin Spice Flavor", but in this day and age it abbreviated to "Pumpkin Flavor" and it's become as much a part of Halloween as Candy Corn. I use Candy Corn as a reference because they come out the same time of the year. And they both have the same like it, hate it or can only have so much of it following.

I guess I would have to be in the "Can only have so much of it" group. I love the Duncan Donuts Pumpkin Spice Donuts, but it seems it's popularity has done to the flavor what the movies have done to comic books.
It's everywhere and in just about every food item you could imagine. I was going to list them all but it would have made this article crazy long...

And it seems just like comic book movies The Pumpkin Spice invasion made a whole lot of people angry. Seriously, there are entire sites dedicated to the hatred of it.

About the only thing I hate Pumpkin Spice are candles and room air fresheners. So I have to say to each their own.

Now if I could only bring Holiday Pepsi back...

You Can't Keep a Good Undead Band Down!

A really long time ago I loved music as much as movies.
Heavy Metal music to be exact and I knew just about everything there was about these bands. I knew their influences, major venues they've played and everything else that was fit to print.

But Grunge had come out in the 90's and it pretty much ended me keeping up with anything after...

I drifted to and fro with other styles that I liked. It was a lot of fun finding about Ghoul Surf, Rockabilly, Splatter Punk, and others. But nothing really took me in like Heavy Metal. So this is a lead up to the band I'm going to talk about now. And I have to say it really connected with two of my lifetime loves Monsters and Rock Club Bands.

If The Storage Unit of Terror had a house band
"The Rhythm Coffin" would be it!!!

The Rhythm Coffin Lineup is...

Gruesome Gereg - Vocals & Guitar
(Skeleton Suit Lower Left)

GhoulHectic Clownie - Drums & Funs
(Clown Center Top)

Eerie Emma -Vocals & Ghoulie Girl
(Ghoulie Girl Black Dress Tombstone Left)

Blood Baron Aaron ~ Bass
(Denim Vest Tombstone Right)

Scarrie Carrie - Vocals & Ghoulie Girl
(Ghoulie Girl White Dress Lower Tombstone Right)

GhoulHectic Clownie (Ghoulio) and Gruesome Gereg had requested me on Facebook over a year ago and that's how I had found out about the band. From then on I had followed their adventures and music, and I couldn't find a single thing that I didn't love about the band. Now as far as me not having enough sense to type about them on the site sooner might have been explained above.

But here I am typing about them now.

They're whole persona takes me back to my favorite years in the 70's of being a full time Monster Kid. My only responsibilities back then were reading Famous Monster Magazine and Horror Comics, assembling plastic monster model kits and having Green Army Men fight Monsters and or Dinosaurs in my back yard or Bathtub.
And watching Scooby Doo every Saturday with mom.

And their stage presence is a collage of past favorite memories from Billy Van's "Hilarious House of Frightenstein", Mad Monster Party, Haunted Attractions, KISS Meets The Phantom of The Park, The Groovy Ghoulies and countless hours in Rock Clubs seeing Unsigned and Headliners when I got older.

Besides the stage show, they always look like they love being up there! Look at any picture of them at any live appearance and they are all smiling the whole time. I mean they are a group of people that do it for the love of it. I mean yeah everybody wants Rock Star Money but if you're not doing it the way you want it turns into a job.

One of my favorite songs is "Gruesome's Cockroach Coffee" and there's others that give the directions to the latest dance crazes in the graveyard, but all of them are fun listens.

Check them out at their Facebook

Talking About Thomas Ryan's "DAY 9"!

If you love do it yourself horror and zombies, boy do I have a movie for you. It's by writer, director for "The Theater of Terror" and bass player in "Vlad The Inhaler" Thomas Ryan!

And the movie is called "DAY 9"!

Thomas plays the part of a man who is having a bad week plus a couple of days extra...

If you ever wondered what it would be like to wake up in the middle of a big old Zombie Outbreak this will give you a pretty good idea.
This poor guy goes through things like running out of food and water then makes the almost bad decision of getting blotto to pass time. After a few days he has to make the decision of re suppling his home or surviving on the road. But there is more involved that you have to watch to find out what it is.

The cinematography gives you the mixture of being there and a reality show. But in a cool way where you feel like a voyeur in the  nine days you spend with him.
Then Thomas kicks it up to eleven by having enough extras to give a you a feeling that the zombie problem isn't going to improve, with more and more arriving each day that goes by.

The practical effects definitely do the job and Thomas had scored the soundtrack himself with his band "Vlad The Inhaler".

To purchace the "DAY 9" DVD for $7.00 contact Thomas at
TOMR666@COMCAST.NET

The DVD includes a commentary by the director and the Vlad The Inhaler Video for "No Way Out" from the Day 9 soundtrack.

Tell Thomas I sent you and give it a watch.

Newt Wallen and Justin Silverman loved an arcade game that was reworked for the N.E.S. just as much as any of us and the name of that game is...

Back when that game was out I wouldn't be a paperboy if I had to, but I was at that arcade every day paying to work the most dangerous route ever known!

And a few later years Nintendo had made their version of it. Fast forward a lot more and Newt Wallen writer director of the soon to be released MIDNIGHT SHOW had this great idea for a parody of the game and teamed up with Justin Silverman from "SILVERMANIA" to write the script. It's done in the style of a movie trailer like the one's in Newt's soon to be released movie "MIDNIGHT SHOW", but is a "SILVERMANIA" episode.

On the location that day as crew members were:

Director Isaac Williams
Production Managers Justin Silverman and Jarrett Courtney
Filmed by Isaac Williams & Kieran Fallon
Boom Mic Operated by Will Rivera
Location Manged by Newt Wallen
Custom Props & Weapons by Tony DeBartolis
F/X Make Up by "Tattooed" Steve Mezo & Jackie Mezo
Production Assistant - Justin Haller

And the actors that day were:

Paperboy - Newt Wallen
Papergirl (from the NES game Paperboy 2) - Kristy Richman
Editor in Chief - Kevin Riordan
Secretary - Jo Pincushion
Recumbent Bike Thug - Harold Fuimaono
Grim Reaper - Will Rivera
Skateboard Thug - Kieran Fallon
Hoop Thug - Isaac Williams
Dragged Paperboy - Justin Haller

It was really cool having Kevin Riordan there because he had interviewed Newt and a few of us for an article for The Inquier's Web Edition. And he did a great job in his role of The Editor and Chief.

My wife Jackie and I were there to do F/X makeup and help with the production wherever needed and it was a great day out too. Jackie had never been to Liberty Lake before so when other shots were being done we were able to walk around the park and spend some much needed brain break time together.

Jackie Mezo applying Kevin Riordan's F/X battle damage.

Kristy Richman "Papergirl" after being attacked by Jo Pincushion's Secretary character.

Jackie applying Newt's F/X base makeup.

 Paperman ready for action!

The Paperman after going rounds with countless thugs.

Me  messing around with Tony DeBartolis's torched Paperboy prop between takes.

And I took a much needed ice cream break.

8 - Bit artwork by Frank Browning that could have been used in the Super NES version.

I had read the script three times in one day because I loved the plot and the gags. And to see quite a few of them acted out (Including the Bounus Level locatioin) was hysterical.

Everybody there that day had a good time and really worked hard at getting all of the shots needed done with the daylight we had. And it was really cool getting to meet new people that we would be working with later on other projects coming up.

And the best part was getting our names on a episode of SILVERMANIA!

Since it's release the video is getting great reviews and comments and getting a lot of recognition from some of the biggest names on the the internet.

Give it a watch with the link below and make sure to leave a comment on the SILVERMANIA YouTube wall.

Matt Gacesa has been hard at work again creating some of the coolest yard decorating I've ever seen.I had typed about his work with collecting, repairing and repainting light up Blowmold decorations this past October

Here's some samples of Matt's Christmas Blowmold repaints.

A discarded pair of Christmas Candles

are given a whole new life.

Matt had bought these choir boys from a outdoor market
that were painted with the wrong kind of paint for restoration.

Matt removed the original and house paint

then did a complete paint restoration with the right kind of paint.

I figured since I'm still trying to figure out some December monster movie articles I would show off some more of Matt's work.

One of my favorite things that Matt does with his displays is help get donations for one of my favorite organizations.

This year he decided to go with a Christmas Village theme with his Blowmold collection.

The Santa Express is making all of it's scheduled stops

More choir figures are on display

The Classic Nativity is on display

Jesus won't be in the manger until Midnight Christmas eve

 Lots of fun animal characters

Santa's Workshop made with "Little Tykes" reapinted play houses

The Christmas Village Build a Bear Workshop

And the Reindeer's Stable

and the flying sleigh has to be my favorite of his set ups so far.

I think the coolest thing about Matt's displays is there is something for everyone to enjoy. And he's able to have a creative outlet that he can enjoy his collection with thousands of others.

See you soon with some December Monster Madness!!!

Happy Winter Halloween!

By - Steve Mezo

That's right Happy Winter Halloween! You can still have a Merry Christmas but I have more fun with Winter Halloween.

I know most of you are shaking your heads, but the fine line that was the month of November has been erased and Halloween and Christmas have been merged. And now Thanksgiving is a dinner break in between.

Still don't believe me? Well A Christmas Carrol was the earliest to do a crossover with four ghost and Jacob Marley was one of the scariest ones of the bunch.

There he was talking to his best friend Ebeneezer a year after his own death to warn Ebeneezer about his past leading to a very bad existence. I think the part that always gave me the willies about him was the handkerchief tied around his head to keep his mouth closed when he was laid out. Then having to drag the chain he forged with the obsession of wealth was pretty brutal.

And look at all of the Halloween type things we do and enjoy every Christmas.

We eat Gingerbread People and their houses like monsters.

We look forward to the treats

and the candy

make that lots of candy.

You get to wear costumes and be characters

put up all kinds of decorations inside and outside your house that you wouldn't any other time of year.

and have mythical creatures scurry around your house.

Then there are all of those Christmas Monsters like

The Grinch

 The Bumble

and Snow Miser and Heat Miser

Then Nightmare Before Christmas came out and really started to swing the holiday pendulum the other way.

Decorations are covered in glitter

Trees are being used

 as well as wreaths

and I've even seen Halloween Holiday Lights!

Then there are all kinds of Halloween Monster Christmas songs like Lon Chaney Jr. "Monster Holiday", Christmas Horror Movies and Slashers, Heavy Metal Christmas Carrol Covers and my Mom's favorite tradition of a Halloween Present.

So now you're saying "Dude where are you going with this?!" and I'll have to answer with "They are both days (or months if you're like me) where you can just enjoy them. And if you decide to march to the beat of you're own drum solo, you can pick what you think are the best parts from both holidays and be happy for three months straight if you like."

Happy Winter Halloween
and I promise this will be the last Fluff Piece for a while...

Grab your favorite monster mask, get a bowl of your favorite sugary cereal and get ready to watch Monsterama GO-GO!!!

http://monsteramagogo.blogspot.com/

Your Hissstorian of the Monster Moldy Oldies Scott Ruth is going to show you things you may have forgotten about or never even seen!!!

After a way too long brain break from the land of the living dead, undead... used to be living, but are now dead then are animated now? Whatever! He's the man that helped me go from cave drawings to bathroom stall scribblings with my writing!

He is now transmitting from a long forgotten Cable Station in a super secret location! And his show Monsterama GO-GO is coming at you live! He is delivering REVIEWS AGAIN, giving all kinds of shout outs to friends that are running around the haunted forest and graveyards of Indie Horror.

And just when you thought you were some kind of Ghoulapedia of Horror *BAM* Monsterama GO-GO is brought to you by Scott Ruth's own sponsor

https://www.facebook.com/Antoyquity

AnTOYquity is a huge collection of retro toys out there. I'm serious if Scott Ruth doesn't have it listed it doesn't exist. There are a lot of Retro Toy sites out there (And I do enjoy them all), but Scott seems to find stuff that were in my own toy box that I forgot about or I wish I knew existed.
And he researches and list the current (market) values of the toys which is pretty cool too if you plan on getting them.

And I have a feeling that Scott is going to start bringing back his findings from the tombs of Retro Advertising too. I remember way back when Scott had shown me a ton of them from the 60's and 70's, where my jaw dropped and I was like "An Ad agency gave the green light for this?!" You think some of the stuff you here now is insensitive? Ha Ha, these ads would have made most P.C. people faint!

If you haven't been to Scott Ruth's sites yet and have never read one of his reviews, get out there and do it!

You Maniacs!!!

Back in 1980 my mom had taken me to see the movie "MANIAC"

No typo there, we saw all of the buzz it was getting on the news back then. And when word got out that Roger Ebert walked out after only watching it for thirty minutes we knew we had to see it.

The funny thing is Friday The 13th that we had just seen a couple months before was way gorier, and Blood Beach that we had seen the week before had way more jump scares. So my mom and I couldn't figure out what all of the fuss was about? And except for one topless scene it reminded us of "Starsky and Hutch" just without them in it.

But I really liked it a lot and Joe Spinell always reminds me of a much loved uncle. And Joe's hairdresser scene sealed it as a favorite for me because my uncle Chico was always a prankster and would do something like that to get a laugh out of me.

About five years later I lucked out and scored a MANIAC poster from one of my favorite Mom and Pop Video Stores. And it called one of those snap together frames together home for a while.
I've had it for years but almost lost it, thanks to a roof leak over my closet. My wife and I had just moved into our current place and were still figuring out what to put where. So I had kept the framed poster and others to get professionally framed in my bedroom closet.
Well the leak had ruined a Godzilla poster, a autographed CLERKS poster and an autographed KISS poster that was gift from a friend.

It may be a little worse for wear now, but I think it adds character to it and it's safely (professionally) framed on my wall.

The best part about watching MANIAC years later is seeing props from "The Prowler" in Frank's apartment. The plaster mouth on Frank's door is part of "Farley Granger's" head casting for The Prowler's death scene.

Now we fast forward to 2012 for the MANIAC remake.

Okay I'll be the first to admit I yelled "REMAKE?! WHAT THE WHAT?!" But when I saw Elijah Wood was playing "Frank Zito" it gave me some hope.

Then I finally saw it and it delivered! Elijah was great as a Frank Zito that you had more sympathy for. And the whole first person take on it added so much.

Another thing with this version is even though you were witnessing/partaking in Franks brutality, you found yourself kind of rooting for him to keep it together for Anna.

"Rob Dimension" (No Clowning Around / Baggage) brought up a great point of how the cities where each movie took place were characters in the movies themselves.

And I really liked that it was made more as a homage to the original, and had one of the coolest tributes to a predecessor in a long time.

Do you do tattoos?

Every time I wear my logo I always get the question of "Do you do tattoos?" And the answer is a big old "NOPE!" I've never owned a tattoo machine and never plan on owning one. I just have a lot of them, and the nickname was given to me by a friend in Monmouth Mall New Jersey back in 1991 to differentiate between another friend of ours named Steve and me.

Now let's go way back to when I was on a bus going from Union Beach to Keansburg New Jersey with my Aunt Vera. "Why?" you ask. Well that's where I saw one up close.
Nobody in my family had any and I don't remember seeing any on their friends that early on in my life.

But there was this man who had to have been in the beginning of WWII at least and he had a Hula Dancer on the top of his forearm.

It was pretty close to this one.

The man saw me starring at it and asked me if I liked it and I gave an emphatic nod and a big old YES! Then he asked me if I wanted to see her hula. I said yes again, then he held his wrist flexed his forearm muscle and made her hips move. After seeing that I new right then and there that I had to have a tattoo!

I was obsessed with them and covered my arms with just about every free one that came in a Cracker Jack box and Bazooka Gum wrapper. And then one night on the old "Real People" Television show they had shown how they were done back in the 70's.
It was so wild because the early flash were done with plastic templates (Stencils) that were acetate sheets with the designs etched into them with a sewing needle. I read on tattooarchive.com that this job was done by shop apprentices.

Then charcoal dust would be set into the etchings then Vaseline would be put onto the persons skin. Then the Vaseline would absorb the charcoal from the acetate to transfer the design to be tattooed. That's a long way from the Thermofax stencils used now.

And that's also when I saw what a tattoo machine was and how they worked. And my mom couldn't wait to say "See it uses a needle to make a tattoo." Now I haaaaate getting needles... But if it meant that was the only way I was getting one and my mom thought she had one over on me, they could have done it with a broken bottle and poster paint!!!

Jump ahead to 1981 and I found myself at the door of "Tony's Tattoo" when he still had his shop on the Union Beach side of Highway 36.
There I was with my best friend Chris Letts back when we were eleven years old. We walked in and "Pirate Tony" was sitting there looking like every old school tattoo artist ever. He could have easily told us to get the **** out of his shop, but he was one of the nicest people I ever met. He looked over his readers and asked us what we wanted and I told him "Tattoos on our shoulders!" The regulars got a good laugh from that and he took two transfers out of a drawer in his desk.

These weren't the ones from Bazooka Gum they were big with high detail and had to be applied with rubbing alcohol. Mine was a skull that covered my entire shoulder, and Chris had a dragon that went down to his bicep. We asked him how much we owed him and he said just wear the shirts he was giving us and tell people where we got them.
Man I wore that poor shirt till it was nothing but threads.

Fast forward to 1986 when I was in high school with my friends Eddie and Kurt, Eddie walked in with a tattoo of Woody Woodpecker on his arm. I was like "Now Way!!!" and Kurt thought it was cool too. We asked him where he got it from and he said Tony's Tattoo. Kurt went the next night and got his and that left Friday night for me.
They told me that they would meet me there and they were a no show that night...
So I walked in and Tony asked me what I wanted, I pointed to a wizard (The 80's standard) and since I had a full mustache then he only asked if I was eighteen. Okay before everybody gets all in a tizzy, tattoos weren't the Mall Crowd standard yet and it was a completely different time period. So anybody getting their first were
usually eighteen. But I lied to the man and got my first at sixteen.

"What did my mom think of it?" Well she didn't see it till two years later after I got it. I didn't go anywhere without a t-shirt at any time, and then on the day of my high school graduation my mom finally saw it when she made me change my dress shirt.
Man she was not happy about that and she yelled that it better be my last one.
I think she forgot about my Cracker Jack and Bazooka Gum days and you know it wasn't the last.

Now the rest came from Tony and his son working a lot with barter. Tattooing wasn't as huge as it is now back then, so I did a lot of apprentice duties that didn't involve any kind of tattoo work.
I would run the Autoclave and the sonic cleaners, arrange the flash and keep the shop as straightened up as I could ,keep the stations cleaned and stocked. And then I would get paid in ink, or if it was a real slow day I would be told to pick something off the wall so they could try out new inks or machines.

Yeah a lot of my work from back then isn't all TV Show style ink, but I don't care because every one of them means something to me. And it connects me to people of the 70's and 80's that smile the second I say "Pirate Tony's" name. And only they know who "Yack, Yack Cacalinski" is or how the "Fitsimmons pin connects to a Fergison bar".

But most of all it makes me "Tattooed Steve"

"A Tale of Nobody" is a movie short by one of the creative team members of NerdRemix Derek Huey

The other half of team NerdRemix is "Scream King" Thomas Gleba.

Now you may remember me talking about Derek's creation
"The League of Science"

And all I have to say is the man knows how to entertain me and make me laugh.

So I thought it was beyond cool when Derek had sent me a YouTube link screener of A Tale of Nobody.
It has this great uneasiness about it because you feel like your watching the day to day of a heartbroken Gamer. And you find yourself giggling over the way Derek portrays "Nobody", but at the same time when you were a certain age you could remember that  one breakup that really sucked!

Then Derek really makes it fun with his nod to CLERKS and his mannerisms as Nobody, and the soundtrack has a a few nods to past favorites like "Toejam and Earl". But once again you keep finding yourself feeling like "Should I be laughing?" Because you can see Nobody unraveling as the day gives way to night.

The short runs a little over nine minutes (And make sure to watch all the way through the credits). And there is a bonus making of reel link with the A Tale of Nobody's video.

Use the link below to give it a watch.

A lot of thought went into this one because I was a little concerned how it would come across. Yeah it could easily be marked as a big old name drop, but hey I did know a lot of these people back then. And I don't want it taken as a boast because this site is partially a collection of my past experiences, and I was lucky enough to be here at the times I talk about instead of California. And a could have been life in California is a whole other story.

Now first I want to thank two very close friends of mine that I love like brothers to this day, Patrick Coy and Keith Perry for being the inspiration for this article your about to read. And I want to thank Keith Perry for supplying our Back in the day pictures.

It is also in memory of three friends that were lost over the past couple years...
They are Bennett Camhi "Mr. B" (The Costume Shop), John Egan (Ritual Torment) and Matt Kerwin (Mass Psychosis)

And dedicated to those that made 1990 to 1992 insane!!!
DAMONACY, RITUAL TORMENT, RIPPING CORPSE, MASS PSYCHOSIS and GRIM LEGION
by tearing the roofs off of Cafe Bar and The Fastlane every weekend.

And to Shawn T. Reich, Warren F. Disbrow, Tony Annunziata, Desiree Russo (Dee Best), The Skeleton Crew at The Costume Shop, Tony DeBartolis and The Mall Rats at Monmouth Mall, New Jersey for giving me my name "Tattooed Steve".

And a very big thank you to Dave Wyndorf (Monster Magnet) for giving me a lot of sound advice from behind a comic book shop counter.
He kept me from making some really stupid choices that would have lead to jail or a room at the Dirt Motel.

So here's me back in 1990

Yup twenty years old and looking like one of The LoSt BoYs, but the girls were into it and that's all that counts. And I was in the middle of the what was the home of true DEATH METAL and what was going to become known as the ASKEWNIVERSE.
And it was all happening in Red Bank, New Jersey when it was still the center for anything to with Entertainment, Art and Music.

Little did I know that the dude that worked the counter at RST Video was going to max out some credit card and make a movie, the guy that ran Fantasy Zone Comics in The Red Bank Mini Mall was going to be on MTV a lot and I would be involved in a movie called MIDNIGHT SHOW with my friend Tony DeBartolis and other F/X artist from The Costume Shop twenty five years later.

And I really had no idea that the bands I mentioned would go on to varying levels of fame. Which is really cool considering it's been over twenty years and people in their late teens and early twenties are still listening to all of them!

The Costume Shop was slowing down a little thanks to the economy back then, so I had to take on a part time manager job at Supercade in Monmouth Mall and this is where I met the crew.

Let's start this tour with Patrick Coy

This dude is more Metal than you could hope to be in four lifetimes and got me into a band called GWAR with their album "Scumdogs of The Universe". And I had no idea that I had a huge part of a year to work with and be friends with Slymenstra Hymen herself waiting for me!

And Patrick Coy is the man that gave me the name "TATTOOED STEVE"

We had a blast in The Costume Shop doing things that the guys from JACKASS were getting on video and getting paid for. Like the time Pat put on a Crash Test Dummy costume and ran into everything in site. We were laughing hard enough, but then this lady screamed "There's a crash test dummy running through town!!!"  to a cop. He already saw Pat run by before and got a laugh out of it, so he just looked at the lady and said "So what?"

And he was there when Bennett and me burned The Costume Shop ceiling when we were trying out Zel Gel on my hand.

The best though is when he ran through the mall in a straight jacket and pajama pants. It's a good thing we were friends with security back then, or we would have been explaining our prank to the cops.

There were a lot of perks at The Costume Shop like getting to hang out with comedians like Bob Nelson, The Amazing Johnathan and Paul Veneer. We were in driving distance of the old Rascals Comedy Club in Eatontown, New Jersey so they would stop by to buy props for their acts. Then were cool enough to introduce us to the owner and would get us free passes to see them.

And then Pat introduced me to Keith Perry

The three of us were fueled with Mad Dog 20/20 on the weekends and living in "Cafe Bar" in Long Branch and "The Fastlane" in Asbury Park.

And that's where I met Doug and Tom from "MASS PSYCHOSIS" and went to school with Matt Kerwin. The band's Artist "FITZ" became a close friend of mine and the only tattoo artist I go to now.

I had grown up with John Egan of "RITUAL TORMENT" and went to high school with the founding members of "RIPPING CORPSE" Shaune Kelly and Scott Ruth.

And Keith had introduced me to "DAMONACY" and "GRIM LEGION". And just recently I found out that Walter Flanagan did the artwork for DAMONACY, Keith is wearing one of the shirts with Walt's design on it. And Jay Mews is sporting a DAMONACY shirt in a school picture going around and in Chasing Amy.

If we weren't catching shows at the Rock Clubs we got to catch DAMONACY's rehearsals at a place in Red Bank called "The Shop".

The thing that set these bands apart is they were all about the sound! The music was going through a huge change back then, and it wasn't for the better as far as I was concerned.
Heavy Metal was turning Glam, Glam was on it's way out because of Grunge, Speed Metal was becoming more commercial with the exception of SLAYER and Death was splintering off in all kinds of directions.

But the bands I've been talking about didn't care about image or any of the other nonsense. They had the drive of bands like "MAYHEM" that were all about the sound of their music. And that's what made me respect them.

When we weren't at the shows, I got to see Keith almost blow out the picture tube of his Television trying out his compound bow from six feet away!

And how can we forget the time a nervous cop pulled his handgun out on the three of us when I was driving us home. Yeah, it's funny now but that night I was trying to keep my brain off of Keith's shirt.

Now that I have you caught up with that this is where Pat, Keith and me worked together to make our own Wile E. Coyote rocket sled to try to get famous.
.

Pat is a phenomenal painter and was getting into F/X and prop building with me at The Costume Shop. And we decided to approach Bennett about forming a business through the shop. We were going to call it The Monster Doctors and see if we could get Keith and Tony Debartolis in on it too.
It was a great idea, but with the lack of something called "The Internet" and Indie Horror Makers loosing Mom and Pop video stores to distribute through it didn't last.

Then Keith had the idea of forming a band called "MALIGNANT DEATH" where he would be lead guitar and I would be bass and vocals. But we couldn't find a drummer on a money bet...
It almost looked like the end of that road too, but I had an idea that just might have been the plan we needed.

I was going to a magazine and found an article about Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin when they co - founded Def Jam Recordings in Rick Rubens dorm room in NYU. And it hit me like a lightning bolt. Keith, Pat and me could do the same thing with the death metal bands that we knew.
They could continue what they were doing, but they would have a backer they could trust that understood them. And we could handle tours, shows, merchandising and promotions. Everybody gets paid and everybody wins.

We told a couple of the bands about this idea and they thought it was cool, but they needed proof that we could promote. So that's what we did.
We took the MALIGNANT DEATH name and made all kids of insane looking flyers with clip art and Pat's original work. Then we made sure that they always had a spot at any and every music store around. Since the artwork was top notch and had some subtle humor to them the store owners and workers started to look forward to the next one. Then the big question came up "What do they sound like?"

And that's how the singles "Dinner With Dahmer" and "Pogo's Playhouse" were talked about and allegedly heard. Keith, Pat and me used our F/X knowledge to create fictitious demo covers and ads for the release of the demos in Europe which were banned.

The best part was when Keith's mom found some of the pictures and thought we were part of some cult! HA HA HA HA

Word kept getting back to our friends about the band MALIGNANT DEATH and the Dinner With Dahmer single. And it would just about take everything they had to keep from cracking up about our experiment.
Once we saw how good it worked, we decided to set out sights on California and try it there. Then we would get established, secure investors and made a return after that we would be able to hook up our friends in Jersey.

We were all set to make our move out there. Then I was pulled over for my license plate light being out the week before we were going to leave. Now normally this would have been no big deal, but my car insurance was lapse by one day. And it was only one day because the office was closed and all I had to do was give the check to the agent the next day.

But on computer I was uninsured the night I was pulled over with the check in my glove compartment with my insurance card! So my car was impounded right then and there and I had to walk home with Keith.
And it got even better from there on... I lost my license for a year  because it's mandatory if you don't have insurance. And I was out three hundred bucks for then policy I paid for the next day and had proof of in court the following day after. But the law is the law and since I didn't have the night I was pulled over I didn't have it. Then DMV nailed me twice with a fine at the beginning of the year and again at the end when my license was reinstated.
Sooooo that pretty much ended that Rocket Sled Trip pretty quick and scattered the three of us for a while.

There were a lot of times where I kept thinking about what could have been if we made it there, but then I really realized what I would have missed out on here. And besides there was absolutely no way of knowing if it would have worked. We could have hit the wall at a thousand miles an hour after all of that plotting and planning.

But at least I can sit here with a smile and say that I have no regrets from that time at all. There's a lot of experiences I can't type about but not a single regret.

I know I'm not the first to type it and I won't be the last...

If you haven't seen this movie yet

Please stop reading right here, watch it and then read this article.

If you have already seen it read on.

"The Cabin in The Woods" has to be my favorite salute to Monster and Horror movies yet. Instead of poking fun at how a lot of them are formula, they worked it into the story line and made us part of it.

I've been reading a lot of other sites and it almost seems like the whole theme of the movie flew over their heads. What they are trying to say is every single Monster and Horror movie we have ever watched was a controlled sacrifice made by the organization doing it. And that's why there are formulas and Rules as explained in SCREAM. And we the audience are the Gods that have to be appeased by these scarifies or the "The Horror Industry" world will end.

Then more have been listing the monsters in the movie at The Purge Scenes in the last reel. And this is where the fun begins.
There is no right or wrong of who or what each monster is. Because most are facsimiles. If they did make the actual definitive of each character it would be gazillions in licensing. So they did some tweaking, and depending on what generation you're from you might identify them with a different movie.  But you can't mistake the 1988 "BLOB".

And one of my favorite homages was the holding area itself. I was so busy trying to see how many monsters I could pick out, I just recently figured out that the holding area is just a big version of 2001's "13 GHOST" holding area complete with artifacts.

And a lot of people forget about the basement artifacts. There's a Fortune Teller Machine that could be a goof on "BIG" or the Jinn from"Wishmaster".

There's a lot of talk about who "Kevin" is
on the staff's betting odds board

and right away I thought he's the Kevin from "SIN CITY".

The I had read somewhere that it was a crew members name, but that was definitely wrong.

But Scott came through with some much needed info to do some proper edits to this piece and gave me this as the identity of who Kevin is.

*Kevin in CITW is based on Kevin from "We Need To Talk About Kevin". Director Drew Goddard has revealed that CITW's Kevin was loosely inspired by Kevin from "Sin City" as well as even Dexter Morgan but that he is most like the character "Kevin" from the novel and film "We Need to Talk About Kevin", in which the child Kevin displays sadistic violent tendencies...*

*Another big Thank You to Scott Ruth for the info.

And finally I think the Giant CGI Cobra is the one from the attic in the original RESIDENT EVIL video game. Remember how much fun he was?!

Now for a ever growing list of each monster found and where their inspirations may have come from, Scott Ruth has been researching and compiling photos of each creature/slasher. And you can see the results of his work on his MONSTERAMA GO-GO website's Facebook page.

Use the banner below to visit there.
https://www.facebook.com/MonsteramaGoGo

Now like I said there is no right or wrong with who these creatures are supposed to be, but I'd be quick to bet that Scott is really close to the mark.
He works on the list for fun between projects so make sure to use the link often to see who or what he's found each time, and there are a lot to list.

Thank You Scott for putting so much work and time into it.

Nightmare Factory Brings me Back to The Good Old Days.

I was bouncing around Amazon Video and found The KNB F/X Documentary "Nightmare Factory".

I didn't know what to expect going into it, but I am really glad that I watched it. It was really cool seeing Greg Nicotero talking about how he formed KNB (The story all of us Horror Old Farts know by heart). And it was really cool to have him talking about how great it was growing up in my favorite generation "The Monster Kids".

My whole site is dedicated to my own lifetime of being a Monster Kid and connecting with others out there. I mean it is so fun talking to someone that I may not have a lot in common with in most aspects, but they light up when it comes to a plastic monster model kit or Famous Monsters Magazine.

And it's even funnier that I watched it a week or two after I just posted an article about my times when I was merging being a Indie F/X Artist and a Heavy Metal Band Memeber "All Roads Leadto Red Bank". I just wished I video taped every early gig I did like Greg, because I would have had hours worth.

And Greg talked about the days when Indie Horror looked out for one another. I had landed just about all of my F/X gigs with the straight to video Horror from word of mouth. Locals would tell whoever about The Costume Shop and I would get a supplies and materials sale and lunch or dinner. A lot of these guys didn't have a ton of money, and I was already pulling in good money from the Entertainment gigs at the shop. So just being out on a location and getting my hands bloody was more than enough.
Then the local Mom and Pop Video Stores would have plenty of tapes for the Horror section, because I would help make the connections there.

He also talked about one of the most dangerous times of growing up as a Monster Kid. And that was sneaking into the living room after your parents went to bed to watch the Late Night 11:30 Monster Movie. You had to keep the volume at the lowest possible level and stay awake the entire movie.
If you were found by mom or dad in front of the TV asleep with nothing but Bug Fights or Color Bars on you were a goner.

And he gave a spot to Tom Savini as a thank you for getting him on the road to where he is now and plug for his F/X school.
Seeing the talent these kids have is great, but they have to remember that learning it is easy. It's making a living from it that's hard.

Ray Charland knows what scares you and how to make it so it can be displayed in your living room.

Just in case you haven't been introduced to Ray at The Storage Unit of Terror before I'll do it now.

Ray is the owner operator of "Forsaken Props".

And the man that created my Eddie Mask.

This time he set his sights on creating every bodies favorite clown.
And he documented the creation of this very limited run of the mask.

This was taken as adjustments were being made to the sculpt
and about five hours away from it's completion.

The finished and cleaned mold ready for pouring.

No machines or assembly lines here.
Ray hand pours a very limited run of a mask and the mold is then destroyed.

After the poured latex has dried it's ready to have the excess trimmed off and the seam floated out. Lots of labor goes into this process as well.

These have been trimmed but not seemed yet. Once they've been seemed they'll be ready for paint and hair.

Now they're being seamed, painted and haired.
Ray even dyes the hair himself by hand.

Once the hair is set Ray trims and styles it to match the character.

And the final that was made available as a full display piece with a professional seamstress created costume, a display mask with the ruffle and wearable mask with the ruffle.

Excellent Work Again Ray!

Talking about Brian Sills Demented Glove Works!

By - Steve Mezo

Ever since we all saw that infamous opening to A Nightmare on Elm Street we all said "I have to have that glove!"

And we all bought this one first...

And we made due.

Me back in 1991with a serious repaint on the glove.

I even made my own appliance

But there were others that weren't satisfied with just repainting and or modifying the plastic Halloween glove. They went to their work benches and figured out metalworking, and then started an entire community of fabricators.

And one of the members of this community is Brian Sills of DementedGlove Works

Lets go with this picture instead...

I had met Brian through Russell Neal II when we were writers for Scott Ruth's DmentD Cinema website. Brian and I have the same sense of humor and with him being so down to earth and we wound up hitting it right off.

As I kept in touch with Brian he had invited me to join a group of builders as a Retro F/X Artist. I did and was blown away by how much I had learned being part of that group. And found a whole new level of respect for builders. I mean I've always had a respect for them, but I had learned so much more.

The main thing I learned was there are more than one style of glove. Each movie has a different styling of the glove, just like each Friday The 13th has a different goalie mask.
A lot of people including myself just took it for granted that it was always the same, because Freddy's almost always in dimly lit scenes and always moving.

You've seen the original in the picture up top now scroll back up and see how it was buffed out and shined up for use in Part 2 here.

This is part 3's where it's made to look like it has more wear

And Part 4 where it has the use and abuse from
parts one through 3

This is the Part 4 I had paid Brian Sills to make for me.

And I love it

Now everyone's choice of which glove they want made varies for all kinds of reasons. Some are purist and want one because it was the first one to be seen on screen. Others like the more polished look of Part 2 and others like the broken in worn look of Part 3.
I chose Part 4 because I love how it looks like it's been through everything from the last three movies. It's blood stained, been burned, buried and just wasn't well kept while it was away from Freddy.

Brian has been building the gloves since 2010 and does fantastic work. I think it's really cool how he puts the research and work to make them sturdy as well as screen accurate, but styles them just enough where you know he was the fabricator.

I like the fact that each fabricator puts their slight design signature on them. Otherwise if they were all screen accurate to the hundredth percent they wouldn't have personality and might as well be made by an assembly line.

And for the price these go for you might as well save up a little more and have Brian make one from your favorite Nightmare movie.

Did I tell you about the miniature gloves he makes as well?

I was in work when my glove arrived and my wife got to see it before me, and even she was blown away by the great job that Brian done.

Then she had sent me this picture in a text.

I just about went nuts when I saw it in the picture and couldn't wait to get home to see it and try it on myself! And when I got home I was not disappointed at all.
The welds were solid and you could tell that the whole thing was made to outlast me.

You can see more of Brian's work and place orders on his website

The Secret Stash has nothing but kids in it!

I was at Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash today
 in Red Bank New Jersey.

And it was full of kids! But it was the coolest thing ever because it killed my fear that Comic Books and Comic Book Shops were going to be a thing that only soon to be Really Old Monster Kids and Hero Followers remembered.

With Tablets of all kinds (Kindle Fire HD) owner myself having movies, games and entire comic books series at the click of a button it looked like it was all going to be lost on a generation...

But there I was surrounded by teenagers going through back issues and asking Walt about current releases. It just about took all of myself control to keep from having a Nicholson style Joker smile on my face.

It's like all that worry was for nothing! Here they were discovering all of the characters, story lines, artwork and plot lines for the first time and loving it. It's a lot like the same retro rebellion that happened with Heavy Metal Albums and Horror VHS Tapes.
One maybe two generations of teenagers moves onto the latest greatest in a digital medium and spells doom for the old style. Then the next wave doesn't want to be like the ones before them that kept yelling "Hands off my stuff", and discovers the classic medium that older kids couldn't care about. And when they have parents that give that questioning "Why would you want that?" it makes it all their own even more.

Then they might even be lucky enough to have older cousins, uncles or family friends that don't talk down to them about this new find. And instead of giving it a "Well in my day it was like..." They give them guidance into finding more cool stuff from that time and influences of that work.

Then it becomes a kind of really cool excavation of sorts where they're uncovering all of the cool relics, but it's still new to them.
And if they have parents that are fans themselves it gives them a connection, but the parents no to give them enough space to enjoy it their own way.

Another reason why I think these kids are all about Comic Books is they aren't the digital jelly heads that they are labeled as. They want to use their imaginations now and don't want to be led around by two hour toy commercials. And they want that physical connection and the smell of print that makes us (old people) smile when we go into a surviving Comic Book Store.

I've seen it happen with Horror Movies and Heavy Metal, and it's really cool that they are rediscovering Comic Books. And since they are the new emerging demographic Corporations are trying to get paid by it's going to strengthen the yell of "Stop the remakes and reboots and get some re-imagining and original creations going!"

Thanks guys for letting this Monster Kid know that all isn't lost.

The console TV at The Storage Unit of Terror is silenced tonight in honor of the passing of Dave Brockie...

I'll never forget the days when I saw a picture of GWAR in a issue of "The Aquarian" at my friend Keith Perry's House where he told me about them, hearing "Scumdogs of The Universe" over at our friend Patrick Coy's house, watching "Live From Antarctica" on VHS at Keith's house, then seeing them live on stage two years later and having to drive home with towels on my car seats.

I was fortunate enough to get to meet Dave once after a performance and he was kind enough to listen to me yammer about the season my friend John B. Watt and I had the chance to work next to and hang out with Danielle Stampe (Slymenstra Hymen).

And like John had typed in his thoughts of Dave's passing "I can't say that I truly knew him as a friend, I barely even knew him as an acquaintance, but I really will miss him regardless."
And the reason we miss him is the fans were part of the list of characters of the act called "GWAR".

We "The Bohab's" are nothing more than food for whatever giant monster they have in tow, and are gladly killed by the alien monster members of GWAR for their entertainment. Or they'll kill us to kill time when bored.

Then there's the GWAR website where you were able to follow Dave's adventures (From another link) and go "Yup, sounds like something that would have happened to me..."
Like the time he fell asleep with a whitening strip on his teeth on the tour bus. It caused him to get chemical burns on his gums, which he had to go to the dentist to have taken care of. And he still went on stage and performed that night!

I wouldn't even type here never mind sing after having went through that mile of HELL.

Not only did Dave share in his misadventures, he revealed how intelligent and level head he was. And he made you want to be a better person yourself with dealing with the negativity of others when needed.

And that connection came back when he shared how the passing of Corey Smoot affected him. It was hard for us to hear as fans that we lost "Flattus Maximus". And what made it even more tragic was how young Corey was as well as being a new father. And then there was the fact that he was once a Bohab himself in the audience wishing he could be on stage too.

What brought us together as fans was we had the alternate reality of GWAR. And it comforted us to think of Corey's persona of Flattus Maximus not being taken away, but getting bored of earth and it's babbling humans then taking a spaceship back to his home planet "Planet Home".

Brent Purgason had taken on the role of "Pustulus Maximus" who is the cousin of Flattus and we welcomed him in! A lot of us Bohabs were happy to hear that Brent was a close friend of the band in reality. And the story of Pustulus making the journey from Planet Home to Antarctica to help GWAR fight their foes, and to continue the quest/hobby of annihilating humans. Let us know that GWAR isn't going away any time soon.

Which brings me back to Dave...

If it were any other band fans would be like "Well now what? He was the voice of the band, how are they going to keep going?!"
But we Bohab's know way better! Dave and the others had built this band for the long haul, and it's a big enough universe to supply new Alien Monster band members for a long time.

The reason why Oderus headed back to his home planet will always be a mystery. So now we have to wait and see what he's sending back to man the microphone and continue the Bohab's slaughter!!!
